Lok Sabha elections: 9 things to know about WhatsApp’s new feature for voters
It’s peak election season in India with all political parties in full campaign mode. Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, an ‘issue’ that is plaguing voters is the dissemination of fake news across social media. To address the issue of fake news, Facebook-owned WhatsApp has launched a new feature. Here are nine things you need to know about WhatsApp’s feature, how to use it and more:
Called “Checkpoint Tipline”, WhatsApp users can now submit ‘uncertain’ information of rumours they receive
PROTO, an Indian media skilling startup is behind the feature but the project was commissioned and technically assisted by WhatsApp
How it works: Users can report any suspicious piece of information on +91-9643-000-888.
Once the message is submitted, PROTO’s verification center will seek to respond and inform the user if the claim made in message shared is verified or not.
The reply received will tell the user if the information is true, fake, misleading or even disputed.
Users can send pictures, video links, texts to verify the authenticity of the information they have received
Information can be shared in five languages: English, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali and Malayalam
WhatsApp and PROTO will ask grassroots organizations to submit rumors circulating across different regions in India
The feature was also used during elections in Mexico and France
