Have you violated traffic rule? Here’s how to check and pay your e-challan online

Have you received an e-challan notice for a traffic violation recently? Knowingly or unknowingly you may have broken a traffic rule because of which you would have gotten an e-challan notice. You can get an e-challan notice for wrong/dangerous parking on the roadside, speeding, jumping red light and so on.

E-challan- Digital Traffic/Transport Enforcement Solution is an initiative of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India.

The e-challan notice is sent to you through SMS on your mobile phone. You may also get the notice in physical format at your registered address. If you delete the SMS by mistake or you do not receive the notice at your registered address, you can still check your challan status online and pay it accordingly.

Generally, you need to pay the challan within 60 days from the date of issue of the notice. Any non-compliance of the e-challan notices may result in the challan getting forwarded to the court. The court may further provide punishment with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 3 months or with additional fine or both.

You must also know that if you have made any driving offence prior to September 2019, you will receive a notice under the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act, 1988. In such a case, you need to pay penalty for driving offence according to the penalty amount applicable prior to September 2019, as per the MV Act 1988. However, if you get a notice for any offence made on or after September 1, 2019, then you will have to pay penalties as per the MV Act 2019 regulations.

According to the MV Act 2019, the penalties for violating traffic rules have increased. So, substantially paying driving offence penalties will have a huge impact on your monthly budget.

These new Motor Vehicle Act laws hike driving penalties from Sept 1
